About the Artist
RD Riccoboni – Painter, Author, Community Voice
RD Riccoboni is an internationally collected, award-winning California artist and best-selling author celebrated for his vibrant, colorful artwork that exudes a positive and life-affirming spirit. A self-taught painter whose work celebrates authenticity, community, and a sense of place, RD began his artistic journey at the young age of four.
Influenced by his early years in the suburbs of New York City and Los Angeles, now based in San Diego, California, RD credits the encouragement of his family and teachers for fueling his passion and drive. Before dedicating himself fully to his art, he gained experience in banking and human resources — skills he now uses to market his own work and mentor other artists in building sustainable careers.
A Style Rooted in Color and Community
RD's artistic style is often described as evocative of the Impressionists, characterized by a vibrant palette influenced by the original rainbow flag — colors chosen to express optimism, healing, and inclusion. These hues represent themes of sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony, and spirit, reflecting his deep commitment to community and a sense of place.
His subject matter is diverse, encompassing architecture, cityscapes, LGBTQ+ history, and portraiture. He has been described as a "cultural heritage storyteller in paint," committed to preserving cultural heritage through art while telling stories that connect people to places.
At the heart of RD's creative process is a simple but powerful belief: authenticity — not trends — drives great art. Collectors feel that and love it.
Art Born from Loss and Love
A significant turning point in RD's journey came during the AIDS epidemic, which deeply affected him through the loss of close friends. This experience fueled his desire to create art with a positive message, and he became actively involved in fundraising for AIDS research — earning early recognition including a "Best in Show" award at an AIDS project fundraiser.
His commitment to community is woven into everything he creates. One of his most notable works, "We Rise As We Lift Others," commemorates the legalization of gay marriage and the flying of a giant rainbow flag in San Diego. This powerful piece was displayed at the California State Capitol. In his portraits, RD infuses figures with vibrant colors inspired by the pride flag to celebrate community and inspire optimism.
