Back in the day, I was visiting Fire Island when I overheard someone on their cell phone say, “Oh, we’re out at the Liza Minnelli National Seashore.” That’s where I got the idea for Bear Island Beach.

This is the coastal edition of my Beartropolis Fantasy Flyover Map series, and it looks like a real place you could navigate. I often get asked in the studio, “How do you get there?” Well, buying a print or the original is a good start. Then perhaps a geography class? It’s a fantasy, guys!

Blue water surrounds the island, warm tans and yellows fill the land, and colorful street grids crisscross every neighborhood. I know, I know, it feels less like a fantasy and more like somewhere you’ve always wanted to live. I bet those beaches are pristine! Well, I’m not so sure about Lake Bish. You’ll have to explore that.
