What if you looked out of a jet window and saw a city laid out in the shape of a man? In Big Red Wood City, I bring that idea into paint. He’s another of my recurring pop-art-style poses, here woven into streets, city blocks, and building shapes.
I’m often asked, “Where did you train?” I didn’t, other than elementary school art classes. I’m self-taught. I don’t really know what I’m doing. I do know these paintings do calm down any anxiety I have. The zone of creativity takes over and I go. These are what I call creative downloads of inspiration.
This painting is part of my Beartropolis Fantasy Flyover Man Map series, the fictional cities I created to celebrate queer life, imagination, and community. Where do you see Big Red Wood City hanging in your home or workspace?
