The Percher's Outlook
Share
What's your outlook — literally? Do you need to see far and wide, or do you prefer things close and contained?
I'm what you'd call a percher. I need to see out, far and wide, or something in me starts to unravel a little. When I don't have that — when I'm boxed in, low to the ground, view blocked — I get testy. Anxious, even. I've never fully understood why.
Perhaps it goes back to a house on top of a hill. That's where I grew up. I didn't know at the time it was shaping me — you rarely do, in the moment. Up there I could see out. I knew there was more out there. I didn't know what it was but I would go find it. Perhaps it's the Aquarius with the Sagittarius rising in me that wants to go out and seek my truth? My Moon is in Libra. Oh, a complicated one... So do you like my painting? hey! At least my moon isn't in the house of pancakes!
Well, when I was old enough I set out on my own. I never looked back. But I've noticed the pattern ever since: every place I've chosen to live has been up high. When I'm not, something feels wrong, like I'm missing information I'm supposed to have.
This painting is that instinct, made visible. Up above La Jolla, looking down at the rooftops, the curve of the coastline, the cliffs going soft and hazy in the distance. Almost Everything visible at once. Nothing hidden around a corner.
But what was I looking for? Did I find it? Yes. Turned out it was me. Seeking truth and sharing it with others. Turns out I can make art like a bad ass too.
Now don't get me wrong. I love nesting in my perch so Yes, I love a room with a view, but I also love to get out there and explore.
So — what's your outlook? Are you a percher and like to see far, or do you feel more at home nesting with things close in?
